Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence in Kiel

The Institute of Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence is an independent institute at the Medical Faculty of Kiel University and the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH).

The institute originated from the former Department of Medical Informatics, which had been part of the Institute of Medical Informatics and Statistics (IMIS) founded in 1964. This reorganisation reflects the growing strategic importance of medical informatics and artificial intelligence in modern healthcare and biomedical research.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Björn Bergh, the institute conducts applied research and teaching in close collaboration with clinical departments of the hospital, biomedical research groups, and external partners from academia and industry. Our work focuses on the practical implementation of health information technologies for healthcare professionals, patients, citizens, and researchers.

Fields of Research

The institute’s research portfolio focuses on four core areas: health telematics (eHealth and mHealth),  knowledge management systems for patient care and biomedical research (secondary use of health data), artificial intelligence applications in healthcare and Biobanking and Omics

A central aspect of our work is ensuring system integration and interoperability through adherence to international standards including IHE, HL7, DICOM, and openEHR.
