As part of the AI-REN project—Improving Future Kidney Medicine Using Artificial Intelligence—the Institute for Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence has made significant contributions to structured data use and cross-border interoperability in nephrology.
AI-REN is funded by the European Union (EU) as part of the Interreg Germany–Denmark program. Project partners include Odense University Hospital, the University of Southern Denmark, and the company Tricode Kiel. The aim of the project is to promote data-based innovations in kidney medicine and to strengthen German-Danish cooperation between science, clinics, and industry in the long term.
A key focus of the work was on the further development of a structured data model for kidney transplantation. In close consultation with nephrology colleagues, the team investigated which clinical information is available in everyday care and how this can be standardized and mapped in an interoperable manner. The modeling concepts developed were discussed and agreed upon with the Danish partners.
The project thus creates a robust foundation for the structured, interoperable, and sustainable use of clinical data in renal medicine.
