As part of the German-Danish Interreg project “The Good Prescriber,” the Institute for Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence is collaborating with partner institutions in Germany and Denmark to develop a clinical decision support tool for safer prescribing of medications in psychiatry.
The project is funded by the European Union through the Interreg Germany-Denmark program. It addresses the growing challenge of polypharmacy—the simultaneous use of multiple medications—which increases the risk of side effects, harmful interactions, and duplicate prescriptions. Polypharmacy is associated with longer hospital stays, higher readmission rates, and rising healthcare costs. In psychiatric care in particular, the prevalence of complex medication regimens has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life and life expectancy.
A key focus of the project is the development of a tool that imports medication lists, individual health data, and drug information from various sources and intelligently summarizes this information. The tool is designed to identify potentially harmful drug-related issues and make recommendations.
Close cross-border cooperation brings together medical expertise and practical experience from both countries. The project strengthens German-Danish cooperation in the field of digital health innovation and helps to reduce the digital divide between the two healthcare systems.
